Big news to announce.  Since April 1st, Anna and I have been serving as consultants to the Cleveland Clinic.  We are seeing patients at the Cleveland Clinic Brunswick Family Health Center.  Anna has appointments in Brunswick all day on Wednesdays and I am seeing patients in Brunswick on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings.  We've managed to work the schedule in Brunswick so that it will not impact our private practices in Medina  and Wooster.

It was very exciting when we got the call from the Cole Eye  Institute inviting us to join their consulting team.  The Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye  Institute is ranked #10 in the nation in Ophthalmology by U.S. News and World Report.  We now have direct access to the Cleveland Clinic's team of renowned surgeons and specialists.  Ultimately our patients in Medina, Wooster, and Brunswick will benefit as we work closer with the specialists in Cleveland.  One unexpected benefit has been the team of physicians and specialists that we've met at the Brunswick Family Health Center.  The Cleveland Clinic has a staff of physcians in every specialty from cardiology, family practice, OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, and neurology, just to name a few, all under one roof in Brunswick.  We are now referring patients to these Cleveland Clinic specialists as the need arises.

Working as a Consultant to the Cleveland Clinic is sort of like a part-time job.  It does not affect our private practices. Our two Drs. Milburn locations are still independently owned and managed.  I believe our new relationship with the Cleveland Clinic will bring a lot of benefits to all of our patients regardless of whether they are seen in our private offices or in Brunswick.

We are very pleased to announce that two of our staff members completed their apprenticeships and became state licensed opticians.  Lora Jarnagin (pictured on the left) and Julie Vizzo (pictured on the right) are both staff members in our Wooster location.  Lora and Julie completed a state mandated two year apprenticeship,  passed the American Board of Opticianry's licensure exam, and were approved by the Ohio Optical Dispenser's  Board to receive state licensure.

Staff development is very important in our office.  Our doctors mentor and train all of our employees and we encourage all new employees to work towards obtaining their optician's license.

Every employee hired in our office must complete an eight week written training course, but our staff training never stops.  Our doctors constantly work with our employees to teach them the proper techniques for pre-testing patients, selecting and ordering glasses, adjusting and repairing frames, contact lens training, patient triage, and billing and filing your insurance claims.

Over the last ten years, five of our staffers have gone from entry level employees to state licensed opticians.  It's quite an accomplishment for our staffers and it's a great record of achievement for our practice.

Our doctors know that an excellent staff makes a huge difference to the success of your office visit and to the success of our practice.

Congratulations Lora and Julie!

Meet Tyler.  He is the starting free safety for the Cloverleaf High School  freshman football team.  Tyler was a new patient in my office back in August.  His vision tested 20/30 in each eye.  That means he failed to read the bottom two lines on the eye chart.  Tyler needed a mild prescription to return his vision to 20/20.

Tyler decided to be fit into contact lenses for the first time.  He did a great job learning how to care for his new contacts and he quickly learned how to put the lenses in his eyes.  Tyler returned to our office today for his contact lens follow-up with some big news.  Since he started wearing contact lenses, Tyler has intercepted three passes playing defense for the Cloverleaf freshman team.  The sharper, crisper vision that he is enjoying has improved his game.  Tyler is able to make quicker reads on the football and pick it up sooner after the quarterback throws the ball.  His story is a perfect illustration of how visual performance is so important to athletes.  Tyler's mom reports that she has also noticed an improvement in his academic performance with his improved vision.

If you are an athlete looking to improve your game, the first place you should start is with a comprehensive eye exam.  Make sure that you give your game every advantage.  Good vision can help your batting average, improve your tennis game, or even make you a nightmare for the opposing quarterback.

Thank you to everyone for a great August.  We just finished the busiest month in the history of our practice.  A special heart-felt thanks to our staff, in particular.  The staff did a tremendous job in August handling the back-to-school optical blitz!

Funny thing happened today.  My right eye has been a little blurry for the past few days.  I thought my contact lens might be dirty, or perhaps it was just some trouble with allergies creating a film on the lens.  I know a pretty good optometrist, so I asked her to take a look at the problem.  Anna found that my vision was down to 20/25 in my right eye.  I have developed a small amount of astigmatism.  So, for the first time, she gave me a toric contact lens today to treat my astigmatism.  Wow!  What a difference!  I'm wearing Biofinity Toric on my right eye.  It feels no different than my old lenses and I'm back to 20/15 -- better than 20/20 vision.

Moral of the story:  if something's a little off with your vision, get it checked out.  Chances are, your optometrist might be able to help.  Mine sure did!

Welcome to the new Drs. Milburn blog page.  Check back often for updates, eyecare news, research findings, special offers, and tips from your doctor.

Several exciting things are happening in our practice this week.  We are expecting the delivery of new pre-testing equipment in the Medina office and a new retinal camera.  The new Cannon camera will deliver razor sharp pictures of the back of the eye in 15.0 megapixels.  That's incredible resolution.  Patients will view their pictures on a 40 inch LCD screen in the pre-testing room.  We anticipate having the new system running in the next ten days.

We also received a delivery of new computers today.  Both offices will be going to electronic medical records in the next 12 months.

The Medina office is offering Saturday appointments in August.  Call now because these appointments go very fast.  The office will be open August 1st, August 15th, and August 29th.

Finally, I want the contact lens wearers in the practice to know about a huge offer from Vistakon.  Patients who are new to Acuvue Oasys are being offered a $100 mail-in rebate on an eight box purchase.  This is the biggest rebate we've seen to date.  Just back from 15 hours of continuing education at Ohio State this past weekend.  The contact lens researchers at Ohio State were pretty high on the Oasys lens.  Of all the lenses on the market, the Oasys has the lowest amount of friction with the eyelid.  This is one reason that many patients are preferring the comfort in Oasys compared to their old lenses.

Last item, the ladies out there might be interested to know that our office has been chosen to carry the Coach spectacle line.  We should have the frames in the office by the end of August.  It's a very upscale line and few practices in Northeast Ohio carry them.  Use your vision benefits to purchase a Coach frame and the savings is roughly 50% off retail.
